World War II

The Blitz was the sustained strategic bombing of Britain and Northern Ireland by Nazi Germany between 7 September 1940 and 10 May 1941, during the Second World War. The city of London was bombed by the Luftwaffe for consecutive nights and many towns and cities across the country followed. More than one million London houses were destroyed or damaged, and more than 40,000 civilians were killed, half of them in London.

The Shakespeare's Head

The sign outside the pub claims the inn was established on the site in 1735 and was named after the owners, Thomas and John Shakespeare, who claimed to be distant relations of William. Nothing of the original establishment remains (the building which stands today is late nineteenth-century) there are serious doubts over whether it has any connection even with Shakespeare’s descendants. A model of Shakespeare can be seen hanging out of the window. The sign outside also claims the bust lost a hand in World War II when a bomb dropped nearby. While the model definitely has one hand, it's not proven if it's a result from the blitz.
